This Super Simple Blackening Seasoning is more of an ingredient, however, it’s a great one to have in your arsenal of recipes!
Before today, I would purchase pre-made blackening blends. I would rely on them to make blackened salmon, chicken, or veggies even. One day, I decided to look up what exactly is in the mix. To my surprise, it’s super simple! And since I know exactly what goes into it, I can control how it tastes and how it seasons. I can now say goodbye to overly salty spices! Because, at least for me, my main issue I ran into was over seasoning, which also meant, over salting. Now, I no longer have to compromise flavor just because of the salt content.
That said, I hope you try this blend for yourself. Feel free to mix and match. As long as you have a mixture of chili powders, spices and herbs, you are set! It is very similar to Cajun and Creole seasonings, however, the most common ingredients include a blend of chili pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, oregano and thyme, along with salt. Variations are by cook to cook preferences.
By the way, the cooking method is called blackening because the purpose is to appropriately burn (AKA blacken) the spice coating. Therefore, this seasoning is really a combination of the spices and the cooking technique.
Super Simple Blackening Seasoning
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 tbs smoked paprika
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
- 1 tsp cayenne
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp dried sage
- 1 tsp dried rosemary
METHOD:
- Combine all ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir until well incorporated. Another option is to add to a small container with a lid and shake. OR! You can add all the ingredients to a spice mill or mortar and pestle, then process for a super aromatic blend!
- Store in an airtight jar until ready to season to your heart’s content, and enjoy!
NOTES:
- I enjoy using this full amount for 2 lb. salmon. It’s super delicious and is great on its own, paired with a salad, or used in tacos!
